ABRSM's innovative online Performance Grades are revolutionizing music education in Kenya. Offering unprecedented flexibility and accessibility, these digital exams have rapidly become a favorite among Kenyan music students, transforming the way they learn and perform..

In a transformative move for music education, the ABRSM's innovative Performance Grade exams, or what we refer to as Digital Performance Grade exams, assessed entirely online via video recordings, have garnered significant global popularity, including in Kenya.

Since their inception just two and a half years ago, global data shows that half a million exams have been taken remotely, fundamentally altering the landscape of music learning.

A New Approach to Music Assessment

The Performance Grade allows students unprecedented flexibility, enabling them to choose what, when, and where they play.

This contrasts with the traditional face-to-face practical exams that require physical presence and are graded on various elements, including sight-reading and technical skills.

Instead, Performance Grades focus exclusively on the students' performance of their chosen music pieces, offering a streamlined and focused assessment.

Penny Milsom, ABRSM’s Deputy Chief Executive, commented:

“It is fantastic that teachers and learners are taking advantage of the choice now available between digital and face-to-face, and Practical and Performance Grades."

The Emergence of Performance Grades in Kenya

Originally planned before the COVID-19 pandemic, Performance Grades were fast-tracked to meet the sudden demand from students who could no longer attend in-person exams.

Launched in September 2020, these exams quickly became a popular and enduring option, now in demand across 82 countries, including Kenya.

Kenyan music students and educators have increasingly adopted this flexible and accessible form of assessment, which has provided a much-needed solution during the pandemic and beyond.

Global Key Statistics:

  • 8 million minutes of video submissions assessed
  • 42 different instruments featured

As a fan fact, the most submitted video is a piano piece that has been marked 30,000 times - Hässler’s Ecossaise in G.

Differences Between Performance and Practical Grades

  1. Assessment Method:

    • Performance Grades: Entirely online via video recordings.
    • Practical Grades: Conducted in person, assessing a broader range of skills.
  2. Focus:

    • Performance Grades: Solely on the performance of chosen pieces.
    • Practical Grades: Includes sight-reading, technical skills, and aural tests in addition to performance.
  3. Flexibility:

    • Performance Grades: High flexibility in scheduling and environment.
    • Practical Grades: Fixed schedules and specific examination venues.

Advantages of Each Approach

Performance Grades:

  • Convenience: Students can record performances at their own pace in familiar surroundings.
  • Accessibility: Ideal for those in remote locations or with limited access to exam centers.
  • Adult Learners: Particularly beneficial for adult learners returning to music or taking exams for the first time.

Practical Grades:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Provides a well-rounded evaluation of a student’s abilities.
  • Immediate Feedback: Face-to-face interaction with examiners can offer instant insights especially for initial levels.
  • High Motivation: Knowing that dates can not be moved can make students set goals and achieve them in time without pushing deadlines.

Embracing the New Normal in Kenya

As traditional practical exams gradually resume, the option to choose between digital and face-to-face assessments remains.

Kenyan music students and teachers should adapt to this new flexibility, leveraging the advantages of both formats to enhance learning and performance.

To Kenyan Music Enthusiasts:

We need to get accustomed to the evolving methods of music assessment.

The new Performance Grades provide a flexible and accessible alternative to traditional exams, reflecting the global shift towards digital learning.

Whether you're a student, teacher, or returning adult learner, embrace this innovative approach to advance your musical journey.

With digital exams and digital certificates, we are now virtualizing everything and making it easier than ever to take that next exam.
