Recording the ABRSM performance grade exams can be confusing if you have never done it before. Here is the guidance you need to get started with ABRSM recording.

Recording an ABRSM Performance Grade video can feel like a high-stakes task, especially if striving to meet all the outlined requirements.

One common concern is missing a part of the introduction.

If you’ve forgotten to announce your name, grade, or any other required detail at the start, the big question is:

Do I need to start over?

The short answer is no; you don’t have to start over if the issue is with the introduction.

ABRSM allows minor edits to the introductory section of the video to add missing details.

However, any edits to the performance section itself are strictly prohibited.

Here’s a complete guide to help you navigate this situation while complying with ABRSM’s guidelines.

What Should the Introduction Include?

At the start of your recording, the following details must be announced or shown clearly:

  1. Candidate Information:

    • Your name.
    • Instrument and grade.
  2. Program Information:

    • Titles, composers, and syllabus list numbers (if relevant) of all the pieces or songs in performance order.
  3. Own-Choice Music:

    • Show the opening of your own-choice music to the camera. Ensure the title, clefs, key/time signatures, tempo markings, and a few lines of music are visible.
  4. Photo Identification (Grades 6–8 only):

    • Show a valid photo ID with your face in full view.

If any of this is missing or unclear in your video, you can re-record and edit the introductory section only to add the missing information.

When to Start Over

You’ll need to start over if:

  • The performance section contains any pauses, edits, or interruptions.
  • The recording does not meet ABRSM’s technical standards (e.g., poor audio or visual quality that affects assessment).

Remember, the performance must be a continuous, unedited recording of the four pieces or songs.

Tips to Avoid Missing Intro Details

  • Make a Checklist: Before you start recording, list all the required details for the introduction and check them off as you go.
  • Do a Trial Run: Practice recording the introduction a few times to ensure you’ve included everything.
  • Have a Script: Write down what to say during the introduction to avoid forgetting key details.

What to Do After Recording

Please review the entire video once your recording is complete to ensure it meets ABRSM’s requirements. Check for the following:

  • All introduction details are clear and present.
  • The performance is continuous and unedited.
  • The video and audio quality are sufficient for assessment.

If any part of the introduction is missing, record that section again and combine it with the existing recording using video editing software. Keep in mind that no edits should touch the performance section.

Compressing and Uploading Your Video

Performance Grade videos can be large, especially for higher grades. If your video exceeds 1GB, you may need to compress it. Here are some recommended tools:

Once compressed, log into your ABRSM account and upload the video under “Submit Recordings.” Before submission, complete the online programme form and declaration.

Final Thoughts

Missing part of the introduction doesn’t mean all is lost. You can salvage your video without compromising the performance by carefully re-recording and editing the introduction. Preparation and attention to detail are key to a smooth recording process.
