First, learn the white keys (C D E F G A B)

The piano keyboard repeats the same pattern of black keys — groups of two and three. Use them as landmarks:

• C is the white key just to the left of any group of two black keys.
• Then the white keys go up in order: C D E F G A B, and back to C again.
• Middle C is the C nearest the middle of the piano — your home base as a beginner.

Place your right-hand thumb on middle C and let your five fingers fall on C D E F G. You can already play a lot of beginner music from this one hand position.

Play your first songs with letter notes

How to read the sheet music (the basics)

Letter notes are a great start, but reading proper notation opens up every piece of music ever written. Two things to learn first:

• The notes on the staff — where each note sits tells you which key to play.
